CARPENTER ANT

Nests in decayed or moist wood and soil, travels great distances for food, mostly in bushy areas, forages at night, eats dead and live insects and a variety of household waste.

ODOROUS ANT

(Tapinoma minutum)

Nests within buildings in walls, stoves, cupboards and subfloor voids, eats household waste foods, prefers sweets but will eat meat, breadcrumbs and other waste etc..

ANT CONTROL
1. All areas indoors and outdoors should be kept free of food particles.
2. Clean indoor kitchen benches, shelves, drawers, floors, tables and chairs.
3. Outdoors should be free of food, bones, unclean pet bowls and unrinsed bottles and cans.

Found in exposed soil or under cover in rotting plants and cavaties, moves indoors in wet weather, prefers sweet food but will eat meat, insects, seed fruit etc...

Ants are social insects that live in more or less permanent nests. Colony sizes vary enormously and are mostly located in soil, wood and among rocks. They are commonly observed around foundations and in wall and rood voids, kitchens, lawns and gardens, the wood of decaying trees, and rockeries.

In unfavourable conditions a change of nest location is not uncommon. Workers forage from the nest for food, they do this by traveling in trails, once a food source has been established.

Ants are often regarded as nuisance pests, as well as this aspect they also present a health risk. They carry disease organisms causing dissentry, smallpox and a variety of bacteria, including Salmonella.

Ants commonly scavenge in kitchens and other food handling areas, as well as garbage cans, dog excrement and other possible sources of disease organisms, their potential for transmitting diseases to humans should not be overlooked.

In addition to the health threat posed, some ants may bite or sting humans.
