Fact: Cockroaches are one of the most ancient insects. Scientific records show their relatives have been around, virtually unchanged in appearance, for over 350 million years, they are among the fastest land-moving insects in the world. Cockroaches are a major cause of allergies and asthma.
Cockroaches are close relatives of termites, as a group they have exploited a diverse range of ecologies, they live among decaying vegetation, under bark in caves and burrows, a few species have invaded the dwellings of humans and have become very successful scavengers that cohabit with humans in many, communities around the world. Infestation of cockroaches develops in and around buildings and other structures that provide food, shelter and warmth or coolness depending on the preferred conditions of the species. Cockroaches are mostly nocturnal creatures which hide during the day and become active at night in order to seek food. Most cockroaches rest in cracks and crevices and hide in the security of enclosed surfaces around them. Cockroaches can contaminate food products, utensils and various areas with droppings, skins and dead cockroaches. Many people are scared of the sight of cockroaches, this is often related to their speed and unpredictable movements many find the appearance revolting, and often where there are substantial cockroach infestations an unpleasant odour may linger. Some people may be allergic to cockroaches, and develop skin irritations or asthmatic problems, this occurs when foods are contaminated by cockroaches and ingested by humans.
