Fact: Fleas can lay up to 40 eggs a day and they take two to five days to hatch. When they emerge as adult fleas they immediately jump on their host and start feeding within minutes, the female will start producing eggs within 36 hours of hatching. There are 2400 species of fleas, of which 120 bite humans.

Fleas are very small and parasitic insects having some 90 species in Australia. Adult fleas are blood suckers, the majority feeding on mammals (eg dogs, cats, pigs) some flea species are very widespread and their biting habits may cause severe irritation, and transmit disease.

Fleas prefer warm humid conditions and therefore are quite prevalent in the Summer. High humidity favours the development of larvae, which may populate both indoors and outdoors.

Most flea bites occur around the ankles and lower legs, and the irritation can persist for days, this can be quite annoying to the extent where pest control measures are sought.
